Student Punished for James Bond Parody Featuring 'Extremists' Wins Settlement

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District reached a $665,000 settlement over a free speech lawsuit stemming from a video made by Nathaniel Yu, a former student, showing a James Bond-type figure fighting off “extremists.” So reports KPIX 5, a CBS affiliate.

james bond 1015614 640smallIn the video, Yu, who was running for student body president, rescues someone who is being forced by "extremists" to participate in a video game competition. While the school told Yu the video may have violated campaign rules, it later became the subject of false rumors that alleged the video disparaged Muslim Americans 

As a result of the video, Yu was disqualified from an impending student body election, although that decision was ultimately overruled and he was reinstated as president for senior year. The district is also required to post a public apology on its website as a result of the incident.
