Indian Casino Growth Stymied by Supreme Court Ruling

To stall casino development throughout the country, opponents of American Indian gaming projects are using a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that limits the number of legal tribes.

 

Under the ruling the restriction applies to those under federal jurisdiction in 1934 or earlier. So Bloomberg reports. The holding, Carcieri v. Salazar, is thwarting the Obama administration's efforts to ease the casino approval process, and is delaying the projects of even those Indian groups with no interest in gaming. Nevertheless, legislation to fix Carcieri has yet to pass.
