Mississippi Defendants Must Have Legal Representation Before Indictment: Ruling  

Poor individuals arrested in Mississippi must be provided an attorney ahead of being indicted, per a recent ruling from the state’s Supreme Court. So reports ProPublica.

lawyer g383868602 640One individual cited as reason for the reform, Duane Lake, spent nearly two years in jail before being provided an attorney and four more before being acquitted of triple murder. The impetus for the change, in part, came after the Sixth Amendment Center issued a critical report of the state’s indigent legal services.
