Ricard was reprimanded for “addressing a biologically female student by the student’s legal and enrolled last name,” according to the article. Ricard was informed that the student preferred a different first name and he/ him pronouns. To avoid using the name, Ricard began addressing the student as "Miss (Legal / Enrolled Last Name." Ricard says she took this approach as a way to be respectful of the student while also adhering to her own religious beliefs.
Attorneys with the Alliance Defending Freedom hailed the victory, while The Southern Poverty Law Center described the alliance as a “hate group” for its stance on LGBTQ issues.
