Verrilli won several high profile cases that supported President Obama's goals, including cases dealing with healthcare, immigration and same-sex marriage.
Prior to his position as solicitor general, he graduated from Yale College and Columbia Law School and was a clerk for J. Skelly Wright of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan. Deputy Ian Gershengorn will be appointed acting solicitor general. Verrilli will step down officially on June 24.
