California Enacts ‘Automatic’ Voter Registration

Under a new law in California, people who go to the state’s DMV to obtain or renew a driver’s license will be registered to vote unless they opt against it. So reports the Los Angeles Times.

California is the second state to enact such a law after Oregon, where, unlike in California, DMV visitors aren’t asked whether they’d like to opt out of voter registration while they’re at the agency and may only do so after they receive a card in the mail that informs them of their registered status and allows them to opt out.
