The man, William McCollom, woke up at the sound of barking dogs several hours after falling asleep with the help of sleeping medication and alcohol. He armed himself with his service weapon and left his bed to investigate. Finding nothing, McCollom returned to his bed with his gun, which he put between the sheets. It was there that the gun accidentally went off, paralyzing McCollum’s sleeping wife from the waist down. If convicted, McCollom faces up to one year in jail.
