Do High Court Rulings Afford Cops Too Much Protection?

A recent op-ed from The New York Times argues that recent Supreme Court rulings have made it nearly impossible to hold police officers accountable for civil rights violations.

The author notes that the rulings:

  • Allow police officers to shoot at a vehicle involved in a high-speed chase and keep shooting until the chase ends
  • Protect local governments from liability unless it is proved that the city’s or county’s own policy—not just the government employee—violated the Constitution
  • Provide that a government officer can be held liable only if “every reasonable official” would have known that his conduct was unlawful.
