Ditch Bar Exam: Illinois Committee

A committee of the Illinois State Bar Association last week proposed a unique way for state supreme courts to help today’s often heavily-indebted law students: dump the bar exam.

So reports the ABA Journal.

The proposal is aimed at helping students avoid the expense of spending several months preparing for the state bar exam after graduation by allowing them to:

  • Take the bar in February of their third year or
  • Become lawyers without having to take the bar at all

The committee’s report also contained more traditional suggestions for helping law students cope with today’s challenging legal-job landscape, such as requiring law schools to emphasize more practice-oriented courses.
