PETA argued the monkey’s rights were violated when Slater republished the picture, which was taken in 2011. According to the terms of the settlement, Slater will donate a quarter of future revenue generated from the picture to charities dedicated to protecting its species in Indonesia.
The dispute began after Slater asked the image be taken down from Wikipedia and the informational website refused saying Slater had no rights to the photo. PETA then attempted to protect the monkey’s rights to the picture, but a judge ruled monkeys cannot own a copyright.
