The employees at the plant typically operate heavy machinery and face hazardous conditions, the decision held, and the random testing program is part of the company's contract with the steelworkers' union, which represents the plant's employees.
The court made the ruling in the course of throwing out a case filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of a woman who was dismissed by U.S. Steel after failing a breath alcohol test shortly after she began her employment there.
