The officer, Jeronimo Yanez, stopped Castile on July 6 for a broken taillight and reportedly said after the incident that Castile looked like a suspect in a robbery. According to information from prosecutors, Yanez faces two other felony counts for dangerous discharge of his weapon, stemming from the presence of Castile's girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter, who were both in the car.
A lawyer representing Yanez said the presence of a gun, not race, was the impetus for the shooting.
